RAPH DUMAS - Multi Electronics EP

LACE010

LACE010

Ten years slipped away since Raph Dumas with his fellow Nice released the first 12 inches on Lace Recordings: “Sport et Détente”. Raph is now coming back with “Multi-Electronics” a fresh solo EP.

The idea of this experiment is to combine acoustic and electronic music, proto techno on one side and deep and soulful material on the other. This record puts together very different elements such as voices of a bluesman, a lyrical singer, a scatjazz songstress and home recorded sounds.

DJ and Producer, Raph Dumas has during the past years worked on various projects: releasing, mixing and producing albums for Nilco, Renaud Papillon Paravel, Jean-Laurent Chartron, Pascal Comelade.
His versatility does make sense regarding the eclectic musical background of this all round artist : from mod all-nighters to rave parties in the 90’s, going through contemporary music, experimental projects on traditional repertory. All these steps contributed to make his music grow into new perspectives, and lead him to explore a wide range of musical styles.

Based in French Catalonia, his music and culture are alike: colourful, simple and authentic.
He’s using old instruments, seventies techniques of recording and mixing, spring reverbs, vintage compressors, beat-boxes and samplers. The result is an eclectic 4 tracks EP:

Multi electronics sounds like a Kenny Dixon born in Manchester or a Moroder on acid, when proto disco meets vintage electro.

Crossed Road is a modern blues on which the magical voice of Jean Laurent Chartron is held on by an hypnotic bass-line, it just sounds like the soundtrack of a dark western movie.

All magic is a surprising lyrical song with a New-York electronic groove: Laurent N’Dong Dolo lent his voice to be looped and treated. Together with José Barrachina on jazz guitar they give to that track a unique sound, sensual and sweaty.

The end is a peace anthem: Isabelle Durel is delivering the sweetest jazz-scat. Sampled, stretched and skilfully cut up, it punctuates piano broken harmonies supported by a heavy TR909 kick. As it plays on, you might think this could draw into melancholy but in fact it remains soulful.
