RAPH DUMAS - A Rare Toy

Further to his high acclaimed 7 inches singles “Trip/Weekend” and “Le Chanson Douce” – both released on the “must have” French label Enjoy Recordings, and respectively recorded with The Primaveras (”the magic southern soul band”) and Pascal Comelade (Catalonian number one recording artist worldwide) - Raph’s back with a quite surprising track named “A Rare Toy”. But what is it really? Disco? Techno? Experimental? Mental for sure…
Reviewers may have hard-times to put this one in the right section… and to make matters worse there are a bunch of remixes coming along that are all quite different from each others even though all of them are running after the same tempo…

The original version is about an audacious combination of vintage synths loops and child-like crunchy sounds with on top some Brazilian style male and female vocal parts. This mash-up is going on and on towards surprising rhythm variations and key transposes onto a solid groove.
You’ll hear at once Dumas’ trademark. Don’t hesitate to place this one in any playlist, it can be placed right between i.e. underground disco cuts and techno classics.

Then cool remixes are here to express the versatility on this piece of art: Nice (Cyanogène, Ruby Breakfast, Karat Records, Soulsoleil, fenwerk, Stickymouk, Force Inc, DTC, VirMinisketch…) delivers a remix on a minimal tip but with a super expensive sound treatment that will take dancers straight to a sci-fi movie.
Further on, Toulouse based experimental composer and DJ Franck de Villeneuve (Mil Records, Sonic360, Nettwerk, Heads+Arms, Loukoum, Da-Traxx, Side FX, Rachdingue, Hypnotic Room) is taking this very rare toy into a dark but sweet introspective into European techno culture, using his great production tricks and specific sound-scape.

Back to super-club action, long time partner in crime Manuel Perez has put together two separated remixes: the machines remix is crossing-over from atmospheres to ravey style stabs energy.
As bonus track, his disco dub may entertain masses on large dance-floors as well as many DJ’s wishing to get some more fun in mixing up different styles in modern dance-music.
Well, like it or love it, this release is really outstanding and original. This may not be the next sampling revolution but it sounds like nothing else done before, still being very comfortable to dance and listen to.
