RAPH DUMAS - Multi Electronics EP

LACE010

LACE010

Ten years slipped away since Raph Dumas with his fellow Nice released the first 12 inches on Lace Recordings: “Sport et Détente”. Raph is now coming back with “Multi-Electronics” a fresh solo EP.

The idea of this experiment is to combine acoustic and electronic music, proto techno on one side and deep and soulful material on the other. This record puts together very different elements such as voices of a bluesman, a lyrical singer, a scatjazz songstress and home recorded sounds.

DJ and Producer, Raph Dumas has during the past years worked on various projects: releasing, mixing and producing albums for Nilco, Renaud Papillon Paravel, Jean-Laurent Chartron, Pascal Comelade.
His versatility does make sense regarding the eclectic musical background of this all round artist : from mod all-nighters to rave parties in the 90’s, going through contemporary music, experimental projects on traditional repertory. All these steps contributed to make his music grow into new perspectives, and lead him to explore a wide range of musical styles.

Based in French Catalonia, his music and culture are alike: colourful, simple and authentic.
He’s using old instruments, seventies techniques of recording and mixing, spring reverbs, vintage compressors, beat-boxes and samplers. The result is an eclectic 4 tracks EP:

Multi electronics sounds like a Kenny Dixon born in Manchester or a Moroder on acid, when proto disco meets vintage electro.

Crossed Road is a modern blues on which the magical voice of Jean Laurent Chartron is held on by an hypnotic bass-line, it just sounds like the soundtrack of a dark western movie.

All magic is a surprising lyrical song with a New-York electronic groove: Laurent N’Dong Dolo lent his voice to be looped and treated. Together with José Barrachina on jazz guitar they give to that track a unique sound, sensual and sweaty.

The end is a peace anthem: Isabelle Durel is delivering the sweetest jazz-scat. Sampled, stretched and skilfully cut up, it punctuates piano broken harmonies supported by a heavy TR909 kick. As it plays on, you might think this could draw into melancholy but in fact it remains soulful.

PAWEL KOBAK & MARIA ANGELI - Sphinx

LACE009

LACE009

After two successful collaborations on Route 33, Pawel Kobak has recorded the original version of “Sphinx” in Barcelona with Maria Angeli. The great work supplied by Stockholm based Poland native deep house maestro, and the charismatic skilful Italian singer who is established in London, resulted in an awesome song with strong emotion.

“Sphinx” becomes even stronger when post-produced for club action by Kobak himself (club mix & club dub) and it will have a wider sight over different kinds of dance-floors with the help of some effective remixes by Manuel Perez, DJ Mourad and Raph Dumas.

The old-school flavour of this recording reminds of a time when vocal house was not as formatted as today,. With perfectly arranged and beautiful string-pads, captivating vocals, hooky stabs, hypnotic percussion and rich drum-beat, “Sphinx” is a song to remember as much as a floor killer when dropped in a funky house DJ set.

All you have to do is to play it out, and you will witness a unique response from the crowd.

MANUEL PEREZ - Feever

LACE008

LACE008

At last, Feever is out for real! Deep house heads will be able to get their hands on this solid hips-twister, finally released on Lace Recordings with a bunch of expansive mixes.
For a few months the original track has been tried on specific dance-floors, played by a selection of dedicated DJ’s, so we know the damage it can make.

Thanks to his long experience in that genre of dance music, old-school DJ/producer Manuel Perez has achieved a classic cut, with the purpose of creating something timeless away from superficial electronic music trends: Tight beats, hypnotic conga loop, low pitch bass, analogue keys, deep chords, dub delays, discrete vocal stabs… this is the combination that Feever is about for maximum spiritual dancing pleasure.
Obviously, the original track has also got something sensual due to its blend of Latin rhythm and Soulful vibes.
Perez’ other version is named “machines dub” - stripped down with analogue synthetic bass-lines and wide effect action – and is intended to more minimal/tech-house oriented DJ sets.

Tunisian electronic music hero DJ Mourad (Soul People Music, Selekta, NDM, Surge rec, CyberJamz…) seems to have been well inspired while remixing it, to the point he had to deliver two takes: His “Carthage remix” transposes the atmosphere of the original version in a dreamy way, floating onto killer house beats flavoured with north-African percussion patterns.
Further developed “Gothenburg remix” offers an additional urban vibe to this project.

The most different and alternative remix of this package is definitely Raph Dumas’ take.
Enjoy Recordings first protagonist combines perfectly Feever’s original parts, adding an uplifting vibraphone line that is sparkling over a calf-shaking subsonic bass-line while horny stabs are grabbing attention. This perfect collage based on disco-break-beats and vintage R’N'B flavours invites funky dancers to get down with style under a sky of spotlights…

With those five versions this chic release will certainly strengthen the classy image of Lace Recordings’ label catalogue.

RAPH DUMAS - A Rare Toy

LACE007

LACE007

Further to his high acclaimed 7 inches singles “Trip/Weekend” and “Le Chanson Douce” – both released on the “must have” French label Enjoy Recordings, and respectively recorded with The Primaveras (”the magic southern soul band”) and Pascal Comelade (Catalonian number one recording artist worldwide) - Raph’s back with a quite surprising track named “A Rare Toy”. But what is it really? Disco? Techno? Experimental? Mental for sure…
Reviewers may have hard-times to put this one in the right section… and to make matters worse there are a bunch of remixes coming along that are all quite different from each others even though all of them are running after the same tempo…

The original version is about an audacious combination of vintage synths loops and child-like crunchy sounds with on top some Brazilian style male and female vocal parts. This mash-up is going on and on towards surprising rhythm variations and key transposes onto a solid groove.
You’ll hear at once Dumas’ trademark. Don’t hesitate to place this one in any playlist, it can be placed right between i.e. underground disco cuts and techno classics.

Then cool remixes are here to express the versatility on this piece of art: Nice (Cyanogène, Ruby Breakfast, Karat Records, Soulsoleil, fenwerk, Stickymouk, Force Inc, DTC, VirMinisketch…) delivers a remix on a minimal tip but with a super expensive sound treatment that will take dancers straight to a sci-fi movie.
Further on, Toulouse based experimental composer and DJ Franck de Villeneuve (Mil Records, Sonic360, Nettwerk, Heads+Arms, Loukoum, Da-Traxx, Side FX, Rachdingue, Hypnotic Room) is taking this very rare toy into a dark but sweet introspective into European techno culture, using his great production tricks and specific sound-scape.

Back to super-club action, long time partner in crime Manuel Perez has put together two separated remixes: the machines remix is crossing-over from atmospheres to ravey style stabs energy.
As bonus track, his disco dub may entertain masses on large dance-floors as well as many DJ’s wishing to get some more fun in mixing up different styles in modern dance-music.
Well, like it or love it, this release is really outstanding and original. This may not be the next sampling revolution but it sounds like nothing else done before, still being very comfortable to dance and listen to.

MANUEL PEREZ - Mangotronique

LACE006

LACE006

Here comes Manuel Perez new single and project: Mangotronique blends latin-mambo style rhythms patterns and techno Detroit/Chicago inspired atmospheres.
The single consists of four different takes developing variations out of one groove formula. Either Euro Mango, Frozen Mango, Peeled Mango or Acid Mango will find its way in creative dj’s sets, whatever inspiration they will get while rocking any dancefloor. This release sounds very characteristic of the vibe that Manuel has developed through his long career career as music producer and DJ, and reveals both latin, funk and electronic aspects of his large music culture and experience.

Artist background

Being the one who created Wrong Steps in Sweden, and more recently part of Marendadisc - artist collective based in south-west France - Manuel Perez’ reputation has also been built upon his very long and international DJ career.
Manuel began by the mid-eighties as resident DJ in the best clubs in south west France and Catalonia.
At that time he introduced the early house and techno to a wider audience in that area, working for clubs legendary clubs like Château de Fitou or Rachdingue, before to participate to early rave events, often inviting MC’s and live musicians to perform in his sets.
Soon enough, his reputation expanded overseas which lead him to move to Stockholm in 1993. Since then, Manuel has been Djing nearly all over and he has been billed next to the biggest names of the electronic music industry.

Manuel Perez first important release was the ‘Strong Accents’ single on Loop Records, produced together with Alexi Delano and Cari Lekebusch.
Healthy releases followed on labels like Plumphouse, Loop, G-Force and Step2House, as well as remixes for Warner and MNW. Keeping on producing recordings, he also had the opportunity to co found the label Svek before launching his Wrong Steps Productions studio and label project.

In 1996 he met French percussionist Philippe Monrose and they created Spiro Projecto, an electronic fusion act involving diverse international guest musicians and vocalists.
Their mutual studio and stage experience has enabled them to create Spiro Concerto, a percussive live act delivering serious dance-floor action on an exotic tip.
Long before world-lounge-electronic genre became trendy, some of their work was released via obscure 12′ EP’s and singles, and later was licensed to many compilations like ‘Hotel Costes” and labels like Yoshitoshi or Turbo.
Many of their titles have been remixed by artists - i.e. Raph Dumas, Jori Hulkkonen, YMC - or even The Beloved.

Through the years, Manuel has invested time and energy on studio activities, produced, mixed or mastered several albums for quite a few record companies. He also released collaborations with artist like Pawel Kobak, Fredrik Stark, Jesper Dahlbäck, Microman, Nico Bellotto, Alberto Vicente, Mourad Sliti, Ron de Cuba, Brice
Bertran, Aqua Bassino, Martinez…
On the remix list some relevant work has also been done for Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Martin Venetjoki, Håkan Lidbo, Dalminjo, MinimalBCN, Max Cherry, Ctrl+Alt+Supp, Uninvited
Partners, Popcorn, The Delivery Boy, Julie Constantine… More to come soon.
