RAPH DUMAS & THE PRIMAVERAS - Ode To Tanguy Jo

ENJ017

enj017_ode-to-tanguy-jo_sleeve

During the last 15 years, Raph Dumas has done it all. He counts record shop owner, label manager, DJ, stage performer, producer and many other occupations as his job. After flooring dancers in clubs recently with tracks such as Multi-Electronics and A Rare Toy (Lace Recordings), Raph now takes up a different job completely. As bandleader of The Primaveras (”Springs” in Spanish and Catalan), Dumas provides a mind-blowing musical history lesson that focuses on his homeland of Catalonia.

This is a very personal project, as Tanguy Jo was the nickname of Raph Dumas’s grandfather, a Spanish-Catalonian refugee hunted by Franco’s army. In 1939, Tanguy Jo settled Port-Vendres, a small fishing city in Northern Catalonia. Tanguy Jo started an Orchestre de Bal Traditionnel (literally orchestra of traditional balls) with other Spanish immigrants and musicians from Barcelona. The act became one of the first fusion bands to blend traditional Catalan instruments with electric guitars, drums, keyboards and other modern gear. The band became successful and played all over Northern Catalonia for many years. However, in the late sixties, competition from orchestras playing popular songs and burgeoning DJ based entertainment in nightclubs forced the musical outfit out of business. Tanguy Jo had to sell all his equipment and take a job working in Port-Vendres’ fishing port, later driving round Europe selling mussels from a truck. There are no recordings left from Tanguy Jo’s band and only a few photographs show their existence. Raph’s grandfather never mentioned anything to him about this part of his life, because he considered himself a failed musician.

The Primaveras project is a modern interpretation of band’s music in its glory days, with the same desire to fuse the heritage of Catalonia with modern musical ideas. Mr. Dumas provides cool samples and smart scratches to this project, whilst the band provides considerable musical muscle. Another important role is played by French Saxophone hero Alex Augé, who has worked with the likes of The Wailers and Regg’lys. Augé supplies amazing brass arrangements, which are very important to this project. The other members of Primaveras are Patrick Félicès (bass), Thierry Lopez (Guitar), Sébastien Sanz (Keyboards), Vincent Vidalou (Tible and Tenora - traditional Catalonian woodwind instruments), Frédéric Guisset (Flute and Flaviol - Flaviol is a Catalonian flute) and Georges Vaills (Trombone). On occasions, the band is joined by La Cobla Catalana Mil.Lenaria, a Catalan instrumental ensemble that accompanies the traditional Catalonian La Sardana dance. La Cobla Catalana Mil.Lenaria gives the group a big band set up in live environments.

The first LP from Raph Dumas & the Primaveras entitled Ode to Tanguy Jo is a unique album. The title refers to the classic Ode To Billie Joe song and is a tribute to Tanguy Jo and his secret band. It explores various musical horizons, melding together gutsy rhythms from various dance genres with improvisational ideals from jazz, raw funk power and ancestral Catalonian sounds. On paper, this musical mix sounds hard to stomach, but the various flavours work together wonderfully. There are a number of highlights on this remarkable album. Le Chanson Douce (Soul Long Edit) is a playful ditty featuring a twanging plastic guitar, reliable percussion and sweet vocals from Dumas’s 4 year old daughter Lou. Zodiac is a jumping jazz effort, with sprightly sax, pushy trombones and kicking drums. Week End (BCN Edit) is a riotous celebration of the time to party, where grooving guitars, lovely strings and looped vocals play their part. The album brims with excitement and individual character from start to finish.

Ode to Tanguy Jo appears via the Catalonian based Enjoy Recordings stable. The label courts diverse artists, putting out records by the likes of Swedish electronic king Hakan Lidbo, Paris based house artist Max Cherry and early house revivalists Legal Disko. This personal album from Raph Dumas and his trusty band shows that the label is not afraid to take musical risks and supports the rich heritage of the Catalonian region.

HAKAN LIDBO - From Hackney To Caracas

ENJ020

Be prepared for this special experience, you will soon be asking for more.

Enjoy Recordings is releasing again by popular demand the long awaited album “From Hackney to Caracas” by Håkan Lidbo.

With some sense of humour, Håkan Lidbo has created a journey into exotic and unexpected situations in which his character has experiences between a suburban town and a dream destination.

The Man has got class, that’s a fact, and further to his success in the music industry, he can afford some irony about what success is about.

Starting with a vibe setting title-track and ending with the cover of Howard Jones’ hit “What is love?” - interpreted by Stockholm’s vocalist Emma- this breathtaking album sounds magic, exotica, percussive, spiritual, housey, funky and dreammy…

Arrangements being just amazing, all tracks are catchy and exiting for listeners and dancer’s pleasure.

The ultimate entertainment, Lidbo style…

MAX CHERRY - Beat Conductor

ENJ016

enj016_beatconductor_sleeve1

Enjoy recordings releases another dance-floor candy for the pleasure of all crowds. Max Cherry’s debut release is a cross over pumping track where he managed to great effect to blend-up some disco-breaks, retro bleepy sounds, sampled vocals action and jazzy chords.

DJ Janoz (from the “Famille” French electronic label) and Raph Dumas remix brings in some funky bass-line uplifted by eighties analogue stabs over a chest bouncing kick, intended for proto-disco sets.

Spanking beats, synthetic disco bass-line, modulated delays and paddy layers are the ingredients of Manuel Perez’ remix, with additional TB303 wobbling hypnotic lines on his bonus Acid dub version.

After being an active promoter of Enjoy and Lace record labels in Paris, Max Cherry, together with his mate Esteban, decided in 2004 to launch their own label: Vicky Productions. In the beginning of 2005 Vicky’s 2nd single reached the second position of the “Dance charts” in England.

After developing further skills in music making and record promoting, Max Cherry stays now focused on his own productions for Vicky ; working on the side for eclectic projects such as Hektor (an electrorock band he’s a part of) and Full Clip ( Hip-hop duet with MC Spike that is preparing his first album out in early 2010). His last production: one track “We love” and one remix for the hip-hop and house collective “Rouge à Lèvres” consisting of Disiz La Peste, Grems and IVromain. Those tracks are included in the album “Démaquille-toi”.

On the club scene, Max Cherry pays tribute in his mixes to all his musical influences, from brazilian beats to jazz through rock, funk and electro, in a permanent search of originality. He’s, since recently, associated with another DJ, Franck Garcia (Flying Buzz) for a hi-energy 2 desks performance that should make some buzz in the months to come.

LEGAL DISKO - Need A Beat / Jam Is Pumping

ENJ015

enj015_legaldisko

Mid-late eighties was a brilliant time in terms of evolution in modern dance-music and club-culture, also thanks to the introduction of affordable sampling- machines and other electronic instruments misused to great effect by creative DJ’s from the days.

With obvious references to that period, Legal Disko has delivered two floors fillers basically created as a joke: “Need A Beat” and “Jam Is Pumpin” are taken from an exclusive collection of tracks of that kind to be released on Enjoy Recordings over the next months.

With some serious sample action, pumping house-beats, fat bass-lines, wild effect-modulations, crispy analogue synths, uplifting string-pads and repetitive gimmicks, both “Need A Beat” and “Jam Is Pumpin” (and their dub versions) will be strong tunes to play whatever dance-floor you will be facing.

This double A-side single brings back some flavours that new crowds as much as experienced clubbers will understand and appreciate. No pretentious attempts of creating a trend, and no need to follow another one, so let’s just have a party… And don’t forget to turn on the strobes!

HÅKAN LIDBO & ALVINA RED - Moon and Stars

ENJ014

ENJ014

A few weeks later after the release of “Senegal” single, the legendary Hakan Lidbo is back on Enjoy Recordings with an outstanding and catchy mid-tempo radio friendly dance track : “Moon and Stars”.

Such a release should not be a surprise from an artist such as Hakan who has experimented with success all genres of modern dance music - from the most avant-garde electronica projects to real glamorous disco-house - that he has released on the best labels worldwide through the last decade…

“Moon and Stars” has also been written and performed by Swedish-French vocalist Alvina Red whose name has been around for a few years: she is a respected song-writer and singer known for great recordings that have been handled by talented producers like Pawel Kobak, Martinez, Dan Curtin or Jori Hulkkonen.

She is currently working on an album project for French label Marendadisc.

A couple of years ago, the demo version of “Moon and Stars” have been the object of an international remix contest won by Parisian tech-house young wizards Uninvited Partners, also known for their brilliant “Pyramide” single released last year on Deeplay Soultec. Deep-tech-dub oriented DJ’s will be delighted with this spacey version of the song.

Another version has also been supplied by South French deep-funk duet Labulo (also working with labels like Eklektik, 121 Records in France or Pork in the UK). Their remix proves that soft lyrics and fat funk bass-lines can be combined in harmony. Their highly appreciated production skills and their futuristic vision of pop music turned the song into a peaceful yet groovy masterpiece.

A radio edit, an extended club mix and dub mix version will also find their way in many play-lists.

HÅKAN LIDBO - Senegal

ENJ012

ENJ012

There is really no need to introduce Håkan Lidbo. Maybe you also heard about: Alpha The Male, Alvarez De Jesus, Big Spender, Bobby Trafalgar, Data 80, Dredger, Hakan Lidboux, Ho Shan-Ling Bu, Jell, Libido & The Thin Male Nude, Miss Bombay 1974, Monsoon, Royal Flesh, Rupert Pupkin, Stockholm Decadence, or the Vanisher…

He is one of the best and busiest musician and producers of electronic music in the world or even the universe! (check out his title “Planet Earth” (The Kiruna Broadcast Project) part of his project “Music For Alien Civilasations).
To mention only a few, Håkan has released countless brilliant records on labels such as Wrong Steps, Afro Art, Cartridge, Moody, Fragile, Loaded, Estereo, Worship, Paper, FiJi, Boo, April, Poker Flat, Mitek, Force Tracks, Compost, Shitkatapult, etc.
Håkan has undertaken remix work for the likes of Fatboy Slim, Ennio Moriconne, Midfield General, Kool Keith, Q-Burns, Lisa Shaw, Dalminjo and many more. He has even produced Yello’s “Planet Dada”…

The recording before you is Håkan Lidbo’s fourth release on Enjoy Recordings, and once again emanates class. The first track is “Senegal Gals”. Its teasing percussive intro coaxes people onto the dance floor, while the frenzied latter part will hold them there! “Senegal Pals” is a housier version with a distinct crazy bassline that will stick in the memory.
Then, it is on a breakbeat tip that label’s boss Raph Dumas delivers a nostalgic yet spanking take, followed by Manuel Perez givin’it with his effective action-filled uptempo disco house flavoured re-take.
DJ Mourad (Next Dimension, Selekta, Soul People Music) makes you go mental with his slamming chicago-dubby-percussive “From Dakar To Kingston” remix. Illustrious smooth deep House producer Pawel Kobak (Route 33, Lace, Hi Phen, i! Recordings, Exquisite Music…) also contributes a revision. His version invokes a proper deep house vibe, which will certainly be a winner with his fans.

“Senegal” is destined to be one of the afro-house tunes of the decade!

RAPH DUMAS & PASCAL COMELADE feat. LOU - Le Chanson Douce

ENJ011

ENJ011

Further to the success of “Trip / weekend” single by Raph Dumas & The Primaveras, Enjoy Recordings strikes again with another collector 7inch. “Le Chanson Douce” is a childlike poppy tune with cute vocal action by the four year old Lou, jamming on top of a blend of toy instruments performed by Pascal Comelade who is no one else than the world-class specialist of that genre, with the help of label boss Raph Dumas supplying his typical and classy sound aesthetics stimulated by his always groovy beats. When the original version is on its way to become a radio classic, Raph’s “soul-edit” version turns this title into devastating floor filler.

    RAPH DUMAS & THE PRIMAVERAS - Trip/Weekend

    ENJ010

    ENJ010/ENJ010DD

Catalonian legendary and creative DJ Raph Dumas is back on the road delivering a new bunch ofoutstanding 7′inch singles. But he’s not alone: The Primaveras was a dance orchestra that used to rock dance floors on the Mediterranean coast during the fifties and sixties. Today, the grand children of original members of the band have gathered old tapes and joined Raph for new vinyl adventures. This first record of this series is a double A-side floor-filler: “Trip” is the ultimate happy tune of the year with powerful brass stabs and uplifting arpeggios action, definitely to be played at the peak of the night. On the flip, “Weekend” is a kind of psychedelic northern soul groover, using a not so obvious 80’s R’N'B vocal sample for rhythm craze on top of killer drum-breaks, with also multiple effects layers for great vintage energy… Exclusively made for the digital release, Manuel Perez has supplied a kicking bonus version of “Weekend” consisting of an extended and very effective re-edit, taking the original theme to a raving level, adding analogue keys and a vibrating bass line…

Professional DJ for 15 years, former owner of a specialized record store, entrepreneur and event promoter, label manager, music producer and arranger, remix and recording artist, sound designer, stage performer, Raph Dumas is on the case again as band leader. He remains true to his favourite instruments: a pair of decks and a Theremin. After creating Enjoy and Lace imprints some ten years ago - the first independent dance labels in the area of Catalunya - Raph has produced club classics like “Chicken Beats” or “Sarturday” (aka Baby Doll) and been involved in many fusion live and recording acts like Dumas & Chartron, Dumas & Barrachina or Jazzamix (with sax maestro Alex Augé). His magic tricks also led him to remix artists such as Hakan Lidbo or Spiro Projecto, as wellas he has released countless mixed compilations. More recently, he has recorded with famous musician Pascal Comelade and co-produced Renaud Papillon Paravel’s third album (also with him on stage).

According to his background - he has been driving all kinds of scooters everyday since he was ayoung boy, and grew up with soul, jazz and funk before to get into hip hop and house in the earlynineties - this important release is setting a new evolution in Raph Dumas’ music career. Watch out for next outputs and live gigs, time has come for refreshing entertainment and joyful vespa rides…
