RAPH DUMAS - Coblism

About the album
Raph Dumas brings the two strands of his musical heritage together with this innovative album entitled Coblism. On the one hand there is the traditional music of Catalunya, the music of his heritage, which is in his blood. On the other, there is modern electronic music, to which he has dedicated his life as a DJ and producer. Coblism is the meeting of both, an album that swells with the tradition and pride of the cobla (the traditional Catalan band), but also works on the modern dancefloor. It is Raph’s personal reading of the cobla sound, from the perspective of a modern DJ.
Unlike the Primaveras project, solely a ‘live’ affair, where Raph put together his own cobla and recorded them, this is a studio affair. This album features samples from 1950s vinyl recordings of different coblas’, studio sessions with the Primaveras and Sardanas (traditional dances, where the music is provided by a cobla) that Raph has written himself. This traditional music is combined with the type of beats and grooves you would expect to find on an album of electronic music. Coblism is therefore a unique beast, celebrating both two centuries of traditional Catalan music and modern electronic music culture. On the face of it, this may seem like a strange meeting of cultures and ideas. However, it is not, because the basic role of both the cobla and the modern DJ or electronic music producer is the same: they wish to make you dance. Raph believes there are parallels between the sardana and breakdancing, as both are street dances. He envisages live performances of the album to feature break dancing and traditional sardanas.
The album features Oscar Dalmau, who speaks on the Outro Lliure. Dalmau is a famous TV and Radio presenter in Catalunya. He also DJs as Phil Musical and has made a number of Catalonian pop compilations. Raph’s daughter, Lou, also features on this track. Another guest, celebrated French musician, Pascal Comelade, has supplied the painting on the cover. Comelade is better known for his musical exploits than his paintings, having worked with the likes of PJ Harvey and Robert Wyatt. He has an extensive discography and released his first album in the mid 1970s. However, his artwork should not be underestimated, as this striking album cover shows.
About Raph Dumas
During the last 15 years, Raph Dumas has done it all. He counts record shop owner, label manager, DJ, stage performer and producer as his occupation. He has been a professional record spinner for over a decade and a half. His dedication behind the decks has given him the opportunity to spin records all over mainland Europe and beyond.
Raph Dumas made the logical step to become a producer and set up the Enjoy and Lace imprints, which were the first independent dance music labels in the Catalunya. More recently, he has recorded with famous musician Pascal Comelade and co-produced Renaud Papillon Paravel’s third album. Dumas started The Primaveras project to celebrate the music of his grandfather and his Catalonian heritage. On record, they released the acclaimed Ode To Tanguy Jo album in 2009 on Enjoy Recordings and two sought after 7 inch singles. The group’s music was taken to heart in Catalunya, where it can be heard on radio. Dumas put together an orchestra named La Cobla Mil.Lenaria, who have played at festivals such as Transmusicales in Rennes.
Despite involvement in other musical spheres, Raph Dumas has never neglected DJing or club culture. In 2009, he put out Multi-Electronics and A Rare Toy on Lace Recordings. In 2010 he released The Greatest Funk Of Your Life, which reflects his ability to give you an orgasmic experience on the dancefloor. Coblism is therefore the next logical step for Raph Dumas, combining elements of both his musical past and present.
Coblism track by track
Simple beats, cobla crescendos and diminuendos and wobbly synths feature on Nacions (01). Biomimétisme (02) is a battle between breakbeats and strings. The bass and long instrumental lines loom large on Smoking Cobla (03). A hypnotising melody characterises La Principal d’En Valenti (04). Breaks de la Réal (05) is an exciting percussive number, which features layer upon layer of musical goodness. The brass finds its voice on Mentre Muntanyes (06), albeit in a slightly twisted way. Bernardi (07) is a gorgeous number that features recordings of nature, touching keys and regimented cobla instrumentation. It is hard not to be moved by the cobla melody on Al Zurich (08), which is backed by understanding beats. A fat bassline and woozy grooves dominate Abelles Borratxes (09). Keys and traditional instrumentation of the cobla dance together in perfect harmony on Ball de Nit (10). Lou sings L’Estaca (a Catalonian revolutionary anthem) and Oscar Dalmau speaks out against the music industry on Outro Lliure (11), which brings the album to a close.

RICARDO AVALON - Silence 2.0 (the reworks)
MAD008

RAPH DUMAS - The Best Funk Of Your Life
ENJ022

Raph Dumas brings us a magic album that celebrates DJ culture. In an age when people can let technology do the mixing for them, Raph shows that the forgotten art of real DJing survives today. The Best Funk Of Your Life features that ‘human’ element, which is missing from many of today’s cold and calcuated productions and DJ sets. This album mixes up the best elements of funk, soul and jazz with contemporary electronic styles and sounds from far corners of the globe. It has the spontaneity of a DJ set and shows how skillful Raph has become during his career behind the decks.
He is very popular in France and Catalunya.
Raph Dumas made the logical step to become a producer and set up the Enjoy and Lace imprints, which were the first independant dance music labels in the Catalunya. Success followed with club records like Chicken Beats and Saturday, alongside fusion work with the likes of sax maestro Alex Augé as Jazzamix. On the remix front, Raph has sprinkled magic dust on tracks by artists such as Hakan Lidbo, Manuel Perez and Alton Miller. More recently, he has recorded with famous musician Pascal Comelade and co-produced Renaud Papillon Paravel’s third album.
Dumas started the Primaveras project to celebrate the music of his grandfather and his Catalonian heritage. The Primaveras have been very successful. On record, they have released the acclaimed Ode To Tanguy Jo album in 2009 on Enjoy Recordings and a couple of 7 inch singles. The group’s music can be heard on radio in Catalunya everyday. For live shows, Dumas established a Catalonian orchestra named La Cobla Mil.Lenaria. They have played at numerous big events in Catalunya and in other regions of France. The Primaveras have been booked for Les Transmusicales de Rennes, the biggest music festival in France.
Raph Dumas has not left DJing or club culture behind. In 2009, he put out Multi-Electronics and A Rare Toy on Lace Recordings. This leads us on to the album you see before you: The Greatest Funk Of Your Life. It reflects his coolness as a record spinner and his ability to give you “The best funk of your life” on the dancefloor. That is to say, a night on the tiles with Dumas is as an intense an experience as a night between the sheets with a great lover.

ALVINA RED & MANUEL PEREZ - Vineyard Boogie EP
LACE028

Alvina Red & Manuel Perez happen to be connected to the wine producing region of Côte Vermeille, on the beautiful Catalan Coast.
It comes as no surprised that they are influenced by the wine making process, which plays a very important role in the lives of the people who live in this area.
Here, the duo bring us a very musical EP, which reflects Alvina Red’s background as a classically trained musician and the decades that Manuel Perez’s has spent as a club DJ.
- Vinestock Boogie is a grooving technoid effort. It features cool keys, mellow synth and muscular percussion.
- Bucket Express is a deeper techno cut. Shining synths, smart beats and a supporting bassline do the work here.
- Harvest Time drops the tempo a little, but does so in style. Here is a midtempo effort, where watery keys, fuzzy synths and half-step beats meet.
- The Disco Dub of Vinestock Boogie is a slightly more stripped back version. The cool key patterns are the focus on this mix.
WHAT THEY THINK:
Dean Facer “Very nice…. I will support”
Desy Balmer “The versatility of production and knoweldge of electronic music is clear to see and hear. Lovin Bucket Express and Harvest Time and any disco dub from Manu gets my vote. Cool EP. Nov is a busy month for AR & MP.
Bangana “Nice Grenache-vibes”
Garreth Sommerville “Really solid EP. ‘Vinestock Boogie” and ‘Bucket Express’ are my faves.”
Francesco Farfa “Very good job!”
Al Bradley “Loving the original of Vinestock Boogie, great slower tempo & deep grooves, wicked! The more upbeat Bucket Express is a tasty tech cut, very nice indeed. Harvest Time is my pick off this EP, really cool lower tempo vibe, really interesting space & sounds, wicked stuff. Which just leaves the dancefloor-friendly Disco Dub of Vinestock Boogie, equally as cool as the original, nice Moroder-esque feel to this. Excellent stuff.”
Sammy Rock “The duo of Alvina Red & Manuel Perez team up to bring you a house boogie track will all the right elements for open minded dancers only! Full Support!”
Mark Kavanagh “Solid EP of deep grooves and big basslines.”
Ritchie Hartness “Nice electro funk edge to this one.”
Dean Serafini “Always a creative pairing and this release proves no exception - so much diversity within the EP with Vinestock Boogie my initial favourite.”

LACE026

Mark O’Sullivan of DK7, The Mighty Quark and Mark & John (alongside John Dahlback) fame brings us MUK1, produced with Patrik Hellberg.
This record was inspired by a youth project Mark is involved with in Stockholm, his current city of residence.
- Original: MUK1 is a cool musical effort with grooving synths and soft pattering beats.
- Manuel Perez remix: Manuel Perez provides a tougher version with more highly defined beats, fattened synths and cool key sweeps.
- DJ Mourad remix: The beats are more pedestrian, the bass is more mysterious and dubby keys make an appearance on Mourad’s remix.
- Goaz remix: A watery bassline, submerged beats and lost vocals do the work on the Goaz (aka DJ Gomor and Maz) remix.
- Uninvited Partners remix: The Uninvited Partners supply cool keys, deep reaching synths and chopped percussion on their revision..
WHAT THEY THINK:
Rob Warner “This is magic!”
Jon Lemmon “Very unique project overall, I really like it. Cool stuff for different moods.”
Kazuumi Ishii “All five mixes are good, but the original wins for me.”

TUNIS DIASPORA ONE + TWO + THREE
LACE011 / LACE012 / LACE027
Tunis Diaspora is the project name uniting the 3 Sliti brothers. All 3 born and raised in the area of Ibn Khaldoun in Tunis, they are DJs and producers on their own rights. Their dedication for Detroit and Chicago sounds is a known fact. With their Tunis Diaspora Project they wanted to mix those two influences with their North African and Mediterranean roots. The result is a series of 3 tracker EP’s where they will expose their definition of deep house and techno: It is funky, raw and heavy on percussion.
Their story began in the mid-eighties when big brother Mourad got hooked by the hip-hop movement and became a skilled break-dancer, before his passion slipped into creative DJing, which lead him to open his music culture to Jazz, Soul, Funk, R’n’B and later on House, Garage and Techno, always working for the local clubs.
Further to becoming Tunisia’s electronic music pioneer, he moved in 1991 to Gothenburg, Sweden where he continued his DJ career. From there he turned to be an important figure of the Swedish club-scene, bringing over and played all over Europe and Asia, also federating worldwide audiences with his popular radio shows broadcasted on stations such as Mark fm, City fm (Sweden) , Selekta (U.S.A), Interface Pirate Radio (UK) and Mfm (Switzerland)… As an accomplished producer, Mourad has released many of his tracks for labels such as, G-Force, Eloge, Rachdingue, Soul People Music, Next Dimension Music, Selekta (…) and remixed artists like Hakan lidbo, Alton Miller, Manuel Perez or Pawel Kobak.
The second brother of the three - Nabil - started already mixing in 1992/1993 before migrating to Geneva, Switzerland where he also continued his career, establishing himself as one of this country’s most effective and creative Djs, working for clubs like Le Pretexte , FBI , Alhambar , Fenomeno, 2eme Bureau, l´Aiglon, l´Ethno, Scandale…which naturally lead him to get into putting up together some nice tracks with his very special energetic touch.
It did not take long before the youngest - Dali - found his place behind the decks.
He followed to the letter what he was taught by his precursors and, just like them, also moved to Europe and chose Paris as a place to live and get inspired by. Before long, he hooked with the essential house players of the French and international scene and got some cool releases on labels like Soul People Music, Selekta …
Geneva, Paris and Gothenburg are a living part of their respective music production, and you can hear it in what they do, but at the end of the day they all meet at the same point if it ain´ t Detroit, it must be Chicago… with on top that unique and specific oriental vibe only them could create… It’s a family affair!
Lace Recordings is proud to present here the three volumes of the Tunis Diaspora collection of EP’s.
WHAT THEY THINK:
Aaron Carl “Fierce!”
Laurent Garnier “Yess! Will play for sure. Niiice!”
DJ Morpheus “Fresh and exciting!”
Dr Motte “What a great musicaly journey!”
DJ Tres Manos “Fantastic Release!!! Big club deepness in the house!!”
Chuck Flask “Great trax!!!!”
Michael Fossati “Deep contaminous vibes perfect for those moody late night sets…”
Andrew Duke “Sweet sounds.”
Magnus Rindberg “Warm stuff.”

DJ MOURAD - Plink Plank EP
LACE023
The Plink Plank EP from DJ Mourad is an exciting three tracker of technoid grooves. DJ Mourad aka Mourad Sliti grew up in Tunis and currently resides in Sweden.
He began DJing in the mid 80s and by the 90s was making his own tracks that have appeared on labels such as GForce, Wallshaker or Selekta.
He has often contributed to the Lace catalogue before – as the third member of the family project Tunis Diaspora with his brothers DJ Nabil and DJ Dali, also remixing Hakan Lidbo, Pawel Kobak, Alton Miller, Aqua Bassino and Manuel Perez - and makes a welcome return with this EP.
- PLINK PLANK is a key driven stormer. It features layered percussion, throbbing bass work and of course cool keys.
- I ALWAYS KNEW is a more serene affair. Purring synths, steady beats and angelic keys provide the magic here.
- FOREIGN CARPENTERS is an acid stomper. The track takes its strength from sturdy beats, gurgling acid and reliable keys.
WHAT THEY THINK:
Rob Warner “Madness! Loving ‘Plink Plank’ big time.”
Andrew Duke “Awesome!”
Sam Labelle “Wow, I love these tracks. A real intriguing production. All three tracks are in my playlist!”
Dean Serafini “I’ve always found that Mourad’s work defies strict definitions and crosses musical boundaries. There’s certainly plenty to apreciate in this EP with all the tracks making a positive impression from the outset.”
Desy Balmer “DJ Mourad rocks! Deadly EP. Full Support!”
Sammy Rock “Dj Mourad delivers a one-two punch with an eclectic release. Spacey keys and deep beats is what makes this E.P special. A great combination of instruments is delivered in this package. Full Support!“
DJ Morpheus “Really like all 3 tracks in here! Top stuff! full support!“
Aaron Carl “I’m playing this HEAVILY… Straight-up, for to the floor… Deep and techy at the same time , but with some CRAZY twist that dares the DJ to step outside the box. Excellent!“

MANUEL PEREZ - Paradise Already
ENJ025
Here is a sparkling effort from long time DJ and producer Manuel Perez, formelly based in Stockholm and who now lives in the summery paradise of Banyuls Sur Mer on the French-Catalonian coast.
Paradise Already is a smooth deep house gem likely to win over a range of converts. Remixes come from Catalonian starlet Bonnie Drasko and Mark O’Sullivan of DK7 fame.
- The ORIGINAL is an effortlessly cool dancefloor winner. It features cool keys, fizzing synthetics and commanding vocals.
- BONNIE DRASKO submerges the grooves on his remix. Waves of keys, watery synths and diving beats do the work on his sub-aqua version.
- MARK O’SULLIVAN’s Remix has a somewhat darker feel. O’Sullivan employs textured percussion, a groovy bassline and loops the vocals on his cool revision.
- MARK O’SULLIVAN’s Jazz Dub is a lively interpretation. It features jumping drums, cutting keys and questioning vocals.
WHAT THEY THINK:
DJ Tres Manos “Love the vocal! Marc O Sullivan’s jazz dub is EPIC! Can’t wait to play this! Full support!”
Oscar Aguillera “Specially like Bonnie Drasko remix and original version, full support.”
Sam Labelle “Great track! Very classic Ibiza house sound!”
DJ Widenski “Very good release! I like the original the most!”
Desy Balmer “There is no one right now making better techno-disco-house music. Perez really fuses the best elements of each. I’d love to here Perez remix Pet Shop Boys. All mixes are good ! Quality release!”
Sammy Rock “Paradise indeed exsist in this wonderful package full of quality mixes and oversea’s production work that works with the vocals. Quality mixes by Bonnie Drasko and Mark O’Sullivan. Full Support!”
Shur-I-Kan “Nice chords, not so sure about some of the sounds but got something about it. The remixes are pretty cool!”
